Tuff is a very famous stone in Armenia, which is used for constructing a lot of beautiful buildings in the city center of Yerevan, and other cities as well. Its usage started from the development of infrastructure in the country in the 20th century, and led to the plethora of sites covered with the material, making it part of the Armenian cultural heritage. Currently, there are 132 active mines of the stone all over the country; it includes pink, red, orange, brown, and black shades, which are effectively acquired and will be used in the future.
Each year, 16,000 cubic meters of Tuff stone waste is produced from each mine in Armenia, creating more than a million cubic meters of waste annually. The huge amount of waste is accumulated in such cities as Artik, Talin, and other notable locations.
Such a waste harms both the local nature and people around, since tuff dust creates health-related issues, and causes land degradation. Various individuals who live in these cities suffer from lung cancer, issues in agriculture, as well as breathing difficulties.
While doing a research to find out how this waste can be used to solve the issue of an end-user, we identified another gap in the construction market; it turned out that the majority of materials used for sound absorption in Armenia (such as mineral wool) are mainly installed inside the wall, which creates difficulties with noise if construction is already finished without them.
Thus, we decided to solve both problems, and created Patn'Pat, an easy-to-install sound absorption panel made from recycled tuff stone waste!
